Does academic background matter in interviews?

This is controversial but I believe interviewers have certain positive connotations about the college one graduates from. Did you graduate from Stanford or MIT CS? Good, it already means that you have demonstrated some good desired qualities early on in your life.

Interviewer might not let these affect their decision, or so they like to think, but it always is glued to the subconscious mind.  Although more number of years of experience you attain, lesser significant this becomes.

That is not to say that candidates graduated from next-grade colleges are ignored, they are also treated as seriously as others, but good background gives you head-start amongst others. What do you think?
